The baby season that began 3 weeks early.

[…]Necessity or Dumb Luck is no god. That’s where each of us comes in. Elbow grease. Commitment. Community support. By the end of April we finished putting up a waterfowl aviary and adjacent smaller duckling pond, our first since moving to Manila in March of 2023. Maybe what I mean by Dumb Luck is the aspect of our work that requires us to believe that what is necessary will be done, because it must be done. In hindsight, after the accomplishment, one feels enormous gratitude, and also very lucky. As it happened, the season just got busier and busier from […]

The Eagle, as they say, has Landed! (but took off again right away!)

[…]she has also supported our work here in Humboldt County helping us when we were building and expanding our capacity at the old Bayside site. After about 4 weeks, she texted me that the Eagle was ready for release. It was thrilling news! We started to arrange a team (probably Laura and one of our staff) to drive down to Petaluma to get him! I texted Doris that we were ready to travel, but she replied, “No need! Flying Tails will bring your Eagle home!” And there we were, on the 7 of August, at the airport, waiting for the […]

Help Us Make It Through the Year!

[…]sustain these advancements and build on them, we need your help now. A shoestring budget is common for missions such as ours, but we still need a sustainable flow of resources, especially as we move into our busy season. Our goal this year is to raise $150,000 – and if we maintain the caseload of last year, that would raise our average sending per patient from $69 to $93 – still a fraction of our real costs, but a big improvement, an improvement that would reduce the stress on our staff, which by itself would enhance the quality of the […]

A Falcon’s Peregrination Through Recovery

[…]a soft-sided pen to prevent injuries to his unwrapped wing.  We kept him isolated from our noise and commotion to reduce the stress of being unable to put the distance between that he would have greatly preferred. Every so often we checked the fracture site in order to track the healing process. At last, after 18 days, the fracture was stable with a well formed calloused around the break. We removed the wrap and moved the falcon to an outdoor aviary. To our great pleasure, he immediately burst into flight. All that was needed at this point was some time in […]

Bored and socially distant? Hie you to the nearest body of water and start picking up discarded and derelict fishing gear! The life you save will probably be Wild.

[…]be coordinating the trip back north so the gull can return to his home on Humboldt Bay, free and ready again for the wild challenges. Everywhere that people go, fishing hooks and line are sure to follow. With our non-essential business on stand-still in many places, wouldn’t this be a good time to assign yourself some essential work? Namely, helping to clean this junk out of our local environs. It’s literally everywhere. If you go to beach, the river, a lake, a bay, a slough – carry a trash bag with you and pick up what others have left behind. […]

Gray Fox Found Nearly Paralyzed in Shelter Cove Recovers and is Free!

[…]tried to move them as he was being handled. A good sign. Within a few days the fox was able to stand and take a few weak steps. After six days, he could walk and stand easily. We moved him to outdoor housing to test his ambulation. Immediately he ran to the far side of our mammal housing. He did stumble a bit when he reached the other side, about 30 feet away, which was important to note as an observation. Nevertheless his run was a very remarkable display. Over the next couple of weeks his coordination continued to improve, […]

Rare Opportunity (and the only option we have to continue our work)

[…]require our help – ranching, farming, hunting and fishing don’t automatically preclude compassion. So we must be careful not to alienate those who may need our help. It’s a line that we walk everyday if we are being true to our mission in all of its implications and ramifications. And in fact, learning to walk this line is fitting and proper – we are here to serve all of our community when they need us. Being able to persuade an angler to help us stop fish waste pollution is critical! We need more allies, not more enemies. Learning to walk […]

Frustration and Politics Hurting Wildlife Rescue Effort

[…]allegations from wildlife rescue workers in the field that BP and the Unified Command were hampering their efforts.  The wildlife response is owned by BP.  As mandated by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, BP is required to rehabilitate and restore natural resources damaged by their spill. Texas-based Wildlife Response Services, LLC (WRS), contracted by the oil giant though O’Brien’s (a private company on retainer to BP) to oversee the rescue and rehabilitation effort in this catastrophe.
