Merry Maloney, NorthCoast Wildlife Superstar!

[…]charge, giving hundreds of individuals, from Bald Eagles to baby Quail, a second chance at a wild and free life. She developed and presented over 1,000 educational presentations to schools (preschoolers to grad students) and many community organizations, never turning down an educational outreach opportunity. Recently Merry had to retire from the work to which she had devoted her life because of her health. Yet her devotion to wildlife, to the environment, to children and wildlife education continues on through the work of BAX/HWCC’s staff, volunteers and interns, and all who have been inspired by her to be wildlife stewards […]

Ticks, Tock! Gray Fox Beats Clock!

[…]She was fully capable. We took her back to the Samoa peninsula and released her back to her wild and free life. Back in her glory after several days in care. There are simply some things a healthy fox can do that we can’t… Quickly removing her from the net: her displeasure is loud and clear.  With a burst she is going… going…   and at last gone from our sight, back to her private freedom. At the time this fox was reported to us, she was in a countdown to death. Unable to move, vulnerable, and with a worsening condition, […]

Highway Nearly Claims This Turkey Vulture!

[…]by the side of the road. Happily, there are some people in this world with wide open eyes and compassion in their hearts. Two weeks ago, a young man from Hoopa, Damien Scott, was traveling Highway 299 when he saw this Turkey Vulture* (Cathartes aura) struggling in the road, near Blue Lake. Damien is no stranger to wildlife in trouble. For the last several years his mother, Kim, has worked with Humboldt Wildlife Care Center, helping us with wildlife in need in the Hoopa and Willow Creek area. Damien was a young teenager when Kim started working with us. Now […]

“It’s impossible to know if he’ll survive, but at least we gave him a fighting chance.”

[…]rope. It’s not known where the rope came from or the specific type of fishing it had been used for. “Judging from its wounds, I suspect this whale had been hauling that rope for weeks or longer,” George said. “It’s impossible to know if he’ll survive, but at least we gave him a fighting chance.” North Atlantic right whales are protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. The species was decimated by commercial whaling in the late 1800s. Since whaling was banned in 1935, the recovery of North Atlantic right […]

A Wild Mother’s Day of Reunion.

[…]they can fly) who’d lost their footing. Staff decided to bring the owl into our clinic for a quick exam. With no injuries and in good health, we made plans to return the owl to their family the next day. No matter the species, it is much better to return healthy wild babies and juveniles to their parents when possible. We do a pretty good job of providing care for owlets at HWCC/bax, but no one can provide care the way a parent can. Keeping wild families together is one of our primary goals during the busy wild baby seasons […]
