What Tool Saves the Most Wild Lives? (hint: you may be reading this on it right now…)

[…]of our game. Every Spring, our volunteers have a chance to practice the delicate art of advocating for and protecting our wild neighbors, and keeping wild families together. Bird Ally X produces several workshops for our staff and volunteers, as well as wildlife rehabilitators from around the state and nation. Our phone workshop is one of our most critical trainings. While the direct care we provide is important, good work done on the phone can prevent many of the injuries and deaths before care is needed. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of […]

A Hawk Discovers You Can Go Home Again

[…]based on proximity to Petrolia and suitability of habitat – the presence of trees, open land, and the Mattole River made this a good site. Release! Our patient in flight, over the home she was meant to have. Here is a very short video that really shows the explosive speed of this young hawk… The story doesn’t stop here. Within a few minutes from release, the young former patient postioned herself on the highest tree in the area and began calling. Within a few more minutes, an adult Red-shouldered Hawk arrived on the scene. Perched and calling, soon two other Red-shouldered Hawks, […]

Orphaned Raccoons Re-Enter the Real.

[…]months or longer, while they develop, grow, and learn the skills they’ll need for their wild and free lives As the Fall season swings into high gear, we’ve begun the process of weekly checks to determine who might be ready for release. Last week we did our first round. (Be sure to check out the photos and scroll to the end for video!) [check out this story from last year’s raccoon release – awesome video of a young female catching a fish her fist time in the river!] Orphaned raccoons in care learn that fish is found in the water, that […]

To Date, the Busiest Year in HWCC History (the times they are a-changin’)

[…]stay in touch with our supporters to let them know in depth what’s going on. Staff is strong and committed but we’re also tired. For this reason, among others, the return of students to school is good news for us! Old volunteers who know the ropes are back in town! We’re super glad to see them return to HWCC! They’re a big help at this time! Without the help of volunteers HWCC/bax could not accomplish anything. Our gratitude to our volunteers is immeasurable! You can be a big help at this time too! It’s normal for us to be scraping […]

Hermit Warbler Nestling Falls to Ground in the Arcata Community Forest

[…]was worried. “There’s a cat nearby,” he warned. This was easy to believe. Feral and free-roaming cats are everywhere. The truth about their impact on wild animals is so alarming that many people have a hard time accepting it. Even if this had been a case where the bird was supposed to be out of the nest, cats still pose an enormous and relatively new risk. It wasn’t that long ago that a Warbler could jump form nest to ground without worry that a cat was near. Still, all the birds flying today made it through their fledgling stage. We […]

Two Area Sea Geese are Home Again.

[…]raise next year’s young, the hunting pressure is off. Now they only must rest, eat, loaf and become ready for the demands of migration and the workload of parenting. These two geese were fortunate. Each was found on an ocean beach, one in Trinidad, the other near the Eel River’s mouth. Neither had been seriously injured. Both geese were exhausted and thin. A dietary staple of Brant is eelgrass (Zostera marina), especially after Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) have spawned, laying their eggs in the dense underwater plants from November through March along the California coast from Half Moon Bay to Crescent City’s harbor. Our 2023 Holiday Greeting!

[…]herons will be started soon… Funding issues are forever – we’ll ask for your help again and again. Our community’s support has been awesome. Without you 2023 would’ve been a disaster! Wild Baby Season is Coming!

[…]of these curious Earthlings each year! Every year our busy season has the added stress of paying for food and medicine, the water bill, the electric bill, staff salaries. Scrimping and saving is good and necessary, but so is knowing that our basic costs are going to be covered. It’s good to know that if an unexpected major expense comes up – like last year when we treated a lead-poisoned Bald Eagle whose care required six months of recuperation – that we’ve got it covered. So, we’re launching a special Baby Season fundraiser.* Our goal is $25,000 between now and May 31. […]
