Did Your Pot Kill A Hawk?

[…]Productions put on a benefit concert to raise money for a campaign to get rat poisons out of marijuana production. Bird Ally X /Humboldt Wildlife Care Center supports this effort wholeheartedly. So we drove down to set up an information table at the show and spoke briefly regarding the impact of rat poisons on local wild animals, including the orphans that result when parents are killed! While we don’t endorse the idea of using any poison, second generation anti-coagulants (such as D-Con, etc.) are particularly nasty. We’ll have more on rat poisons soon. Did Your Pot Kill a Hawk? expect […]

Bobcat Trapping Banned in California

With a 3-2 vote, the California Fish and Game Commission opted for a complete ban on Bobcat (Lynx rufus) trapping in our state as the most sensible way to implement the Bobcat Protection Act of 2013. (for more information on the Bobcat Protection Act) With two new members of the Commission, the outcome of today’s meeting was anything but certain.ย  However, they both came to the meeting well-informed, and prepared with excellent questions. At the end of discussion, it was the new guys who made and seconded the motion to implement a state wide ban on the cruel practice. Assemblymember […]

Cause for Concern; Clean-up Crews Careless with Bird Colonies.

[…] around pelican eggs.     This isn’t the first report of possible damage to nesting colonies from apparent vandalism by clean up crews. On the June 12, Biologist James Maley was on Grand Isle to record Clapper Rail vocalizations. Of course with oil from the blown out well hitting the island hard, Maley and fellow biologist Drew Wheelan, of the American Birding Association (ABA), observed “a lot of badly oiled birds perched on docks and flying around.” Maley also noted that “there are now obviously oiled birds in most places across the island.” Surveying the east end of Grand Isle, they […]

Lower Klamath Refuge Botulism Response Wraps Up

[…]Care Center, the wildlife hospital operated by BAX as both an important part of wildlife care available in Northern California and a teaching facility introducing the next generation of wildlife care givers to our profession. January Bill and Marie Travers, who co-led this response have done another fantastic job of providing quality care for the innocent victims of human meddling, such as the water wars of the west have caused with chronic misuse of this precious resource that we all need to survive. Thank you to everyone who donated to support BAX in our mission, wherever it takes us, providing […]

Lost Juvenile Found in Redway

[…]hatching grounds far to the south and made it all the way to the North coast. And then for some reason, who knows why, she strayed from the sea, the only place where she can eat, and wandered into Redway. She was found walking along the road. Day 12 in our August fundraising Drive: So far weโ€™ve raised $600 of our goal of $5000 by the end of the month. Your help is needed. Every donation helps. Thank you for being a part of this wildlife saving work! Emaciated from starvation and very weak, with a few scrapes as badges […]

Our New Mugs Have Landed

Each year we produce a mug to commemorate the hard work our volunteers generously donate and a species who had it worse than many others. This year’s mug for 2021 is now here, and it’s the tenth in our series! Featuring the Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), a remarkable bird of the deep northern seas who only comes to land to nest during a brief breeding season, our 2021 mug honors the multitude of Fulmars we admitted in 2021. Between 2012 and 2020, we admitted 35 Northern Fulmars, for a variety of reasons, but mostly just found stranded. Yet in 2021, […]

Preparing for wild babiesโ€ฆ

[…]back to her home in Eureka when she saw an all too familiar sight โ€“ an opossum (Didelphis virginiana) lying in the middle of the road. Wendy pulled over to move the opossum. โ€œI think itโ€™s an insult to leave them to bloat right where theyโ€™ve been run down,โ€ she explained. โ€œI always move them off to the side, into the bushes.โ€ But this โ€˜possum wasnโ€™t dead. She was twitching. So Wendy scooped her up to take her someplace where she could die in peace, back at her place, away from the busy road. But the opossum didnโ€™t die. In […]

Northcoast Co-op’s Seeds for Change Program to Benefit Humboldt Wildlife Care Center for the month of May

[…]a local non-profit organization working in our community is selected to receive the rounded-up donations of shoppers. It’s a terrific program that generates much needed resources for local organizations that are often underfunded and overworked – just like Humboldt Wildlife Care Center! And this month it’s our turn. Thank you! All you have to do to support us is round up your purchase to the nearest dollar when shopping at the Co-op and that will go directly to us, which means directly to our wild patients – and at this time of year, that means orphans by the carload!! Already […]
