Large Aviary at Humboldt Wildlife Care Center Nears Completion

[…]this aviary will be large enough for Red-tailed hawks and Ravens and will greatly increase capacity at our small Bayside, California facility. With final work being done right now, we anticipate completion by July 1. Multi-purpose design allows for flexible use! Added to our other recent additions, our capacity to care for injured and orphaned wildlife on California’s Northcoast  has grown dramatically in the last 2 years. We now have specialized aviaries for every species of bird that we treat. We’ve also added new mammal housing for complete onsite care for all our raccoon, opossum (and this year even coyote) […]

A young crow returns

[…]toward independence by jumping out of their nests. As we remind everyone, this is wild baby season. All over the county, and everywhere, young animals are learning the ways of the world. For songbirds like crows, this means weak and a little clumsy flight long after they leave the nest. They are vulnerable to all sorts of dangers, and in our modern world many of these dangers are man-made – cars, windows, cats, and more. And some times they are at risk of false imprisonment. When the Eureka Animal Control Officer Rob Patton pulled up in our driveway 2 weeks […]

Avian Botulism Outbreak at the Lower Klamath Basin: BAX Responds

[…]lives in the region, and Marie Travers, will be leading the effort. A botulism outbreak on the Klamath Refuge in 2018 resulted in over 400 wild birds, predominantly waterfowl, to be treated for the bacterial infection, and thousands of other birds deaths. (read more about last year’s response.) January and Marie also led last year’s response, which resulted in hundreds of birds saved from the paralyzing disease, as well as the development of protocols for care which were shared around the western states, where avian botulism is becoming a chronic problem, as well as the entire wildlife rehabilitation community. Avian […]

efforts to stop leak fail, meanwhile the slick spreads…

[…]day of this crisis. Every day another million gallons, at least, erupts into the Gulf. By the latest satellite imagery, the slick appears to be well ‘entrained’ in the warm ocean current that flows out of the Gulf of Mexico and becomes the Gulf stream, moving up the East coast of the North America and eventually across the Atlantic to northern […]

North Coast Co-op’s Seeds for Change! Your vote can help us through our next challenging year!

[…]which made a huge difference in our ability to meet the challenges of our very busy wild baby season, which happens at the same time. Also, as it turns out, it benefited even more than usual since our director was sidelined by major health issues right at the start of the season. The funding that this program provided us helped in both measurable and immeasurable ways, making our work easier at a time when we were very concerned about just how difficult the 2021 season would be. Thanks to you, we did more than survive, we thrived. Now the time […]

A heron’s survival.

At Moonstone Beach in Westhaven, about 15 miles north of Arcata, a small grove of tall Monterey cypress is one of the Earthly portals where Herons come into the world. The 9th of May, right after a high wind, a tiny, newly hatched Black-crowned Night Heron, was brought to our Bayside clinic. The little bird still had his ‘egg-tooth,’ a small pointy extra bit at the end of his upper bill, that hatchlings have to help break through the egg from the inside. He weighed about 50 grams. The trees at Moonstone are tall and branchless until their canopy. Without […]
