A Fledgling Hummingbird is Reunited

[…]the fledgling on a nearby branch Our reunite team backed up to allow the adults to feel more comfortable in approaching the young bird.  In moments an adult female came down the fledgling and began to offer food. One of the great joys of wildlife rehabilitation is the chance to reunite families. Too often we aren’t able to get young back with their parents.  In those cases we have good practices that help us raise healthy juveniles for release, but we don’t kid ourselves. NO one is a better hummingbird parent than a hummingbird’s parent. Making wild families whole again […]

Osprey Returned to the Wild! (with pictures!)

[…]out across the river and into the sky and into perfect wild freedom. Another open door to a wild and free future! Juvenile Osprey wonders what to do with the wide open possibilities. The adult Osprey seemed to know exactly where she was and what she wanted. Out of the carrier and into the sky! And the youngster followed close behind… The last glimpse! Good luck fishing! As is always the case, our work is possible because of mutual aid between wildlife rehabilitators, help from agencies like the US Fish and Wildlife Service and CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife, […]

A Mid-Summer Day’s Reality

[…]our wild patients where found. A lot has already happened this year. We’ve admitted, cared for and released over two dozen Mallards, several baby songbirds, and over forty young Opossums. And right now we have over 70 wild animals in care. Mallard ducklings released in June 2018 Our Spring fundraiser in May reached 50% of our goal of $25,000. Thank you to everyone who contributed! While we missed our mark by a wide margin, nevertheless we did raise over $12,000 which we immediately converted to raccoon milk replacer, eggs, vegetables, electricity, water, rent and more. We’re asking again. We’re going […]

Steller’s Jays Find Their Freedom After Rocky Start

[…]is natural, normal, and frankly, this is where the profession of wildlife rehabilitation was born. Compassion for our colleagues on Mother Earth is older than we’ll ever know. However, the people from the zoo led us to believe that these young Jays had been taken from their nest. The person who’d raised them was hoping that the zoo would take them for a display. The zoo called us to let us know that we might be hearing from the Jay-napper. They also wanted to assure us that they could take two if necessary. The information that we didn’t get? Where […]

So Many Screech-Owls

[…]commuters driving home in the dark, as early evenings bring nocturnal wild animals out to forage and hunt, at Humboldt Wildlife Care Center we suddenly start admitting many more owls, mostly hit by vehicles. Surprisingly, many owls survive their collision with speeding cars, especially smaller owls who have less mass to contribute to the energy of the impact. Less energy in the impact means the odds increase of the bird avoiding some of the life threatening outcomes, such as broken bones, dislocated joints, eye trauma and other injuries their larger cousins usually suffer when hit by vehicles. Since the first […]

One morning on the 101, two sibling Hawks cause more than a few to take notice.

[…]thing of ours… Our ex-patient flies to the trees where his sister is waiting. The siblings, free and together again, in the wild. Happy interns Brooke Brown (left) and Tabytha Sheeley enjoy the fruits of their labors! Intent, strength, and nearby parent – this young aerial ballerina (and her brother) has everything she needs – including this second chance – for a live well lived on the shores of Humboldt Bay. While these hawks weren’t injured they were in a very dangerous location. Their reluctance to fly away on their own was causing all kinds of commotion with our human […]

Passenger Pigeon on the 100th Anniversary of Extinction

[…]of the East. Now the skies are filled with satellites, aircraft and far too many parts per million and the forests are shattered. For North Americans born in the 20th or 21st centuries, our childhoods are filled with stories of the days when this or that species was so abundant that you could walk across the river on their backs, or it took days for the flock to pass, or the herd stretched from horizon to horizon, or the sun was darkened by their shadow. We hear these stories and wonder what they could mean. Our world is so much […]
