Great Horned Owl Trapped in Duck Coop…

[…]know what happened to injure our wild patients. Context clues, such as where the animal is found, and so forth, along with statistical probabilities are often all we have to go on. Regardless, we still have to treat the animal who shows up, using solid techniques and sometimes our own intuition. It’s highly rewarding work with the only real hazard being that we might fall away from our human neighbors due to how often we must put ourselves imaginatively in the shoes of our wild neighbors. Using our imaginations in concert with good science is the highest level of thought […]

A very busy Summer means critical need for your Support!

[…]300 to 400 animals before this year ends. We simply can’t meet the challenge of caring for wild animals injured by human activity and the derangement of their habitat caused by our ongoing ecological crisis without your help. Regular donations, rolling in each month are what keep us going … While we don’t have the money we need to cover all of our expenses at this time, if it weren’t for those generous monthly contributions, we wouldn’t have the day to day funds to […]

Storm-tossed Gull Finds Freedom on Christmas Day

[…]no injuries, or any other physical problems – so we held the beautiful bird for observation and flight testing. At this morning’s check, the gull had eaten all of the fish we’d offered and was flying laps around the large aviary. We decided that captivity was doing this guy no good at all. During an enjoyable break in the winter weather, the gull was released this afternoon. HWCC Rehabilitator, Lucinda Adamson releases Glaucous-winged Gull at Arcata Marsh, Christmas day.  One of our happiest sights, a released patient moving quickly away from us back into the Wild. Large Waves Batter Seabirds

[…]last couple of days BAX/HWCC has been admitting Double Crested Cormorants rescued in Crescent City for care. Sunday and Monday rescue teams drove up from our Arcata location to survey the area. So far, we’ve admitted three cormorants, each very battered, likely by the very large surf that pounded the North coast Saturday night and Sunday morning. Cormorants roost on rocks offshore at night – vulnerable to intense and unleashed power of the sea. Another team is going to Crescent City today to look for more birds. So far, each of the rescued birds has died due to the severity […]
